Pennies

Today we started learning about money, and, of course, we began with the penny. To begin our penny investigation we all had to pick a penny from the money pot.

Once we each had a penny we began looking very closely at the coin to find out what makes it unique.

We learned that it is the only "brown" coin, it has a smooth edge, that it has a heads and a tails side, and most importantly that it's worth 1cent. We then discussed the pictures on each side. I must say that it began as a pretty funny conversation that I must share. When I asked the kids who's head they thought it was two of them raised their hands, and one answered "God" and the other "John Deere"...haha I love my job. Close, both very very important people, but in fact it's Abraham Lincoln on the heads side, and the Lincoln Memorial on the tails side.

After we learned the ins and outs of the penny, we made a book of penny facts, and did a rubbing on the back!
