The Grouchy Ladybug

This week, to go along with our insect theme, we read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle.

I love this book, and I love doing this funny craft to see what would make your child a grouchy ladybug. However, I can't make your child grouchy without making them lovable as well!

I am SO SO very sorry that I didn't get a picture of Maddie's grouchy bug, but I PROMISE to post it here on Monday!

I hope you all have only love bugs at your house this weekend!

Gone Buggy!!

This week we finished up our Living Things unit by learning all about Insects.

We started by making a list of all bugs we thought could be insects. Then we learned what a bug has to have to be an insect...
3 Body parts: head thorax & abdomen
6 legs...not 8, not 3, not 100..6!
Time to build an insect!

Once we knew exactly what makes an insect we sorted animals into Insect or Not Insect.

Then we reviewed our list and made some cuts.

Next, we got to learn all about what and how different insects eat.

First we learned that flies have a "sponge mouth" that soaks up the moist food that they land on. Bryson,Trip, Addison, and Brynley then pretended to eat like flies with sponges.

Beetles eat solid foods with their big scary "plier mouths". We got to then chomp some crackers up with our pretend plier mouths.

Finally, the we learned that butterflies eat sweet liquids with their "straw mouths". Sofia, Alex, Corinne, and Grayson got to see what it was like to have a straw mouth.

After lunch that day all of my full little caterpillars curled up into their cocoon cots, took a good warm nap, and woke up beautiful hungry butterflies!!!

I had the perfect snack for them...sweet nectar!

Time to put those straw mouths to use!

Mmmmmmmmmm

We had a blast learning all about incredible insects, and we worked really hard on some testing, so we definitely deserved an afternoon of Bugs Life and popsicles.

Thank you to sweet Austin for being a great Star if the Week, and thank you for the delicious applesauce!
