Last week we learned about Community Helpers, and the many jobs that they do.
This week we continued talking about them, but we focused on the tools and machines they need to help them do their jobs.
One of the fun activities we did was trying our hand at building a "building".
First we read a book that showed us step by step how a Library is built.
We then discussed the many tools that were used in the process.
Then it was our turn. The building we were to try and build was an igloo.
First, we were given only marshmallows (in place of ice cubes) and no tools.
Some of us got a good start, but it just wouldn't stay together.
We then brainstormed to figure out what tool would help us keep the marshmallows together.
Toothpicks it is!
These made it so much easier. Look at the igloos we made!
The next thing that we learned about tools was how important it is to choose the RIGHT tool for the job. Each worker has many tools that they use in their work, but there is one that is best to use for each task.
To demonstrate, we looked at many Chef tools.
Then we figured out which ones would be best for measuring then mixing.
Measuring cups and spoons were best for measuring our ingredients,
and the whisk and spoon seemed best for mixing.
Then we put the tools to the test by making whipped cream. Each of us got a turn trying to whip the cream using the tools chosen.
We did choose the correct tools for mixing, but there is an even better one for this particular task...
The Electric Mixer!
We had fun watching the liquid cream turn into yummy whipped cream.
YUMMO!
Nothing better than homemade whipped cream and strawberries.
Finally, we discussed the large machines that are used to help do jobs.
We read a book called "Trashy Town" where we learned how important a truck is to a garbage man.
We then were given a set of shapes and asked if we could make a garbage truck from them.
It was tricky for some to figure out exactly how to put them together, so we worked together to make the truck complete.
No garbage truck is complete without the trash!
Thanks to these machines and tools, we don't live in a "Trashy Town"!
