Fridays in PreK are crazy, so I'm pretty proud that I found time to fit in a teachable moment.
Ive been trying to think of a way to teach my 4/5 year olds about the advanced topic of the Presidential Election. Today I figured out a way to explain the voting process...using pumpkins of course.
Some seniors from The Mount were coming in the afternoon to carve pumpkins with us, so we needed to take a vote on what face our jack-o-lanterns should have. We first discussed how voting works for us adults in the election, then I let them vote in our very important class election.
I gave them a strip of paper with 4 potential face candidates on it. The class then had to,without talking or telling friends, choose their favorite candidate and cut it out.
They then came up one at a time and placed their vote in the secret ballot box.
We then talked about how the votes are counted, without knowing who placed the votes, and the candidate face with the most votes wins!
(I know...not really, but it's a start!)
We then had to do a tie breaker vote for the second pumpkin's face.
Little did I know the Mount girls would come so prepared with their own pictures to carve, so our vote was unnecessary...but fun none the less.
I also must share this cute Pinterest inspired craft we did this week.
Because we don't get to go to the real pumpkin patch, we decided to make one of our own!
Oh my gosh if these don't make you smile I don't know what will. Ask your child which one is his/hers and what it's name is!
Have a great weekend!!
