Tunnel Vision

Moving on to the next habitat...
We just learned what's going on underneath our feet.
Some animals live underground, some hibernate underground, and some tunnel for fun.

Then it was time to create our underground habitat.

After we learned about the animals that live underground we discovered that we can eat roots!
What!?
That's right, we can eat the tops AND bottoms of different plants.
Once we learned which vegetables are "tops" and which are "bottoms" we did some veggie stamping.
Each table came up and picked a top and a bottom vegetable.

Then we took them to the tables to stamp them.

Land Animals

We started the unit this week by learning about animals that live on land, and the different habitats available to them.  We discussed the forest, desert, arctic, and the farm.  The animals that live in these habitats are special colors and have special characteristics that help them to survive in their home.
Take a look at some of the special projects we did for the different habitats.
We began by making a class forest mural made up of handprint trees and different animals that live there.

The other fun project we did was an investigation.  We learned that the animals that live in the arctic are usually white to blend in with their surroundings to keep them safe, and that they have fur or blubber to keep them warm.
We then did an experiment to see how blubber works.
First we put one hand in a glove and covered our thumb in crisco to act as the protective blubber.

Then we stuck our blubber covered thumb and bare thumb in ice water to see how different they felt.
You couldn't even tell that the water was so cold  with the blubber covered thumb, but boy was it cold to our bare thumbs!

Also last week, we learned all about Y.
Look what Chloe found to share with the class...
a perfect Y stick!

Jump Around

The school provided bounce houses, obstacle courses, and snow cones for us to enjoy.

Even Mrs. Dobbins joined in on the fun!

As Allie said, "This was the best day ever!!"

Let's Investigate!

We talked all about different types of scientists, and that they have to use different tools to learn more about their subject.
We learned a new big word...investigate, and we put it to good use!

One type of scientist we learned about studies the weather, and lets us know what is going to happen outside...a meteorologist.
After we talked all about what they do and some of the tools they use, we did a weather experiment of our own.

We made rain clouds!

Some of the cups had storms!
What a better season to talk about weather than Spring!?
We have been talking about how crazy the weather can be, so we talked about the saying
"Spring comes in like a lion and out like a lamb".

We finished up our Science week by watching the 4th grade set off their volcanoes,

and observing our caterpillars as they eat eat eat so they can grow grow grow!
