What do Plants Need?

This week we are moving on to our next living thing unit...plants. Today we discussed what plants need to live, and we did some fun experiments to test it out.

The first experiment we did was to test out how plants drink water, and what it does for them.
To do this we:

Put food coloring in water cups

Then we put freshly cut celery stalks in the colored water

Finally we made our predictions

Now we wait and watch!

Then this afternoon we started our own personal plant experiments so that we can watch plants grow (hopefully) up close and personal.
Each child put one water soaked lima bean

And one water soaked cotton ball

Into our own "Sprout House"

Then put them in the window to ensure our beans have enough light

We also have three experimental plants...
One with no water ball, one with the bag zipped up so it is getting no air, and one that is receiving no light

Then we did the first log in our Plant Journal

We will continue to journal about our plant's growth and find out if our predictions prove true! - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Life Cycles

To end our fun animal unit we talked about those crazy animals that start as one thing and end up as something completely different!
First up...polliwog to frog.

We made a life cycle book, and cute frogs to hang in our room.

Then...caterpillar to butterfly.
Of course we had to start with the wonderful Eric Carle classic "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". Then we learned the cycle and made reminder bracelets...white bead for the egg, one red and three green beads for caterpillar, a brown bead for the chrysalis, and finally a butterfly bead.

Then we learned through eating...the best way to learn if you ask me.
