Then this afternoon we did an experiment to help us understand why some coats work to keep us warm, and some protect us from the rain.
We decided to use a folded paper towel as an example of how a winter coat works, and a glove to show how a raincoat works. we then asked...
Which hand stays warm when you hold a piece of ice? The hand with a paper towel or the hand with the latex glove?
(They are all holding ice it's just a bit hard to tell)

Yes...the hand with the paper towel makes it harder to feel the ice.
I then poured water on each hand and asked...
Which hand stayed dry?

We all agreed that the rubber glove, just like a raincoat, worked best to keep us dry! In contrast, we learned the term absorb, and that that's what will happen to our winter coats or clothing if we wear them in the rain.
Hats work to keep us warm too!!!

Thank you to our Star Riley for her "Red Riley Snacks"! Red boxes of raisins, red punch, and red Rice Krispie treats...how creative is that?!

Finally I'm so so happy to post that the ENTIRE class got purple superstar status today! Every one of my wonderful kiddos did the exact right thing on their morning worksheet, AND they are all becoming such pros at writing their names correctly! I'm a proud teacher:)
