What a fun week we just had leading up to St. Patrick's Day!
We started out by making a rainbow in a jar.
This was a fun lesson to learn a few new BIG words:
Molecules & Density.
To help explain in very simple terms what molecules are and how they affect the density of something, we used marbles and a scale.
If something has more molecules, it weighs more...or is more dense.
Then it was time to make our rainbow.
To start we colored our clear liquids new colors to fit in the rainbow.
We dyed the corn starch purple,
the water green,
and the alcohol red.
Then we started with the most dense liquid, honey, and poured it into the middle of the jar.
Next was the purple cornstarch.
After that we added blue dish soap.
Next the green water.
So far so good!
After that we poured a healthy dose of olive oil in.
Finally, we used a dropper to slowly put the red alcohol on the top.
TaDa!!
And what do you find at the end of a rainbow!?
Leprechauns of course!!
With leprechauns comes a pot of gold and a lot of luck.
Here is what our class feels lucky for...
Finally, to end our week Mrs. Selig brought us each a gold coin that a leprechaun had accidentally dropped. Then we came back from recess and our gold coins had been replaced with green rocks!!
There were small green footprints, a trail of glitter and a note telling us to wash the rocks off.
He made quite the mess!
Oh yeah, he left us a yummy snack too!
Silly leprechaun tried to disguise our gold coins as rocks!
Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!!
